(German version below)
The human psyche is one of the greatest mysteries, which in my opinion is still largely unsolved. Yes, psychology and philosophy have achieved a lot. And yet it is always amazing and often inexplicable how people act, react, communicate, feel, think ...
Because it is often not logical. On the contrary! We do things that we later regret. We don’t do things that we actually want to do. We do things that other people don’t understand or that even hurt them. We do things that destroy ourselves. But we also do things that create great new things and yet are not based on years of meticulous research, but are simply created intuitively.
It may be the most difficult of all subjects for an artist to deal with, and yet that’s what drives me. Not just in art, by the way. It interests me in all areas of life.
It’s not just about people who do things that I can’t comprehend with my own way of thinking. It's also about things that I can't understand about myself. Things that sometimes can be explained psychologically, but sometimes not even that. It is about all of us. Why do we do things that are not good for us? Where do the impulses really come from that brain researchers try to explain biologically with the amygdala and other regions and processes? Emotions play the very biggest role in our lives. But where do they come from, how do they arise and how do we evaluate them individually?
Why do people take substances that are often enough illegal, but above all destroy their own lives? They fight for the release of cannabis or understand Oktoberfest and carnival as nothing more than getting collectively drunk. Why do people hurt themselves and others psychologically or physically? On a small scale as well as on a large scale? They go to war, oppress or make fun of their own people? Fight with neighbors or partners? Why do they take risks they can’t control? Adventures and sports where risk is the primary incentive. People react destructively alone or collectively in many ways. The environment, which I think is mainly caused by explosive overpopulation (in 1900 it was 1, when I was born it was 3, today it is almost 8 billion!) A rumor or Fake News is spread by many even though they know it is bullshit. They defame people for no reason. Social media gives you the opportunities. Anonymous life in the 21st century gives us many opportunities that are shamelessly exploited.
Why are we sometimes just too lazy to do the dishes? Because I am not only concerned with the very big questions, but also with the small ones, such as procrastination, lack of discipline, not warding off a recognizable disaster in time, and so on.
Of course, as a painter, I can’t give answers that philosophy and psychology have been searching for for millennia. Art does not give answers anyway, it asks questions. I ask myself these questions and bring on the canvas what these questions trigger in me. I do not try to bring the consequences illustratively on the canvas, that would be too depressive for me. Despite everything, I try to see the good in people. Because I am much more interested in how we ourselves cope with our inadequacy than in the consequences for the individual, his environment or the world.
Sometimes I despair with the subject. But it is my life-defining theme. It has to be on the screen. And I’m still pretty much at the beginning.

Herzlich
Michael
